Custom Firmware 3.71-M33 Released! PSP!

I just shit my pants… Team M33 has released custom firmware 3.71-M33! Get it while it’s hot, folks!

3.71-M33 changes:

Now uses 3.71
VSH Menu is not longer launched using HOME key, but using SELECT now. This is to not interfere with the XMB function of home, which is now more useful in this firmware.
Psp Slim: umdcache was allocating memory even when homebrew was launched, wasting memory that homebrew programs may want to use. Now umdcache module is stopped before it can allocate any memory, only in the case homebrew is launched. Also, memory is unprotected for user memory usage by M33 core (only when homebrew is launched). Developer, for a sample of how to use the extra memory, see the extra ram sample of the M33 sdk.
Both version boot now from 3.XX ipl, and are independent of 1.50.
The main installer will not install 1.50 kernel anymore. A 1.50 kernel addon for 3.71 M33 that will install inside 3.71 M33 will be released in a few days (for fat only)
Note: due to some changes in kernel nids by Sony, you can expect a lot of kernel plugins not working anymore. Programmers: refer to the sdk readme for details.

Installation requirements: A fat PSP with 3.52 M33-3 or 3.52 M33-4. Previous versions of M33 won’t work, due to a bug that affects them and OE; or a PSP Slim with 3.60-M33. Instructions can be found in the always important readme.txt.

Tutorial on BookR

The best program to use for reading ebooks is BookR. This how you install it. note. BookR is used to read pdfs, txt etc.
WILL ONLY WORK ON CUSTOM FIRMWARE AND 1.50 FIRMWARE.

1)Download BookR at = http://www.sendspace.com/file/jz1538
2) Extract the folders to your desktop
3)Then copy and paste the both %_SCE_BookR and _SCE_BookR to your Game150 folder if you have custom firmware. If you have 1.5 firmware put
the folders in the Game folder. So now it should look like this
Custom Firmware= x/PSP/GAME150/%_SCE_BookR and _SCE_BookR ( note where x is that is the root of your memory stick)
Firmware 1.50= x/PSP/GAME/%_SCE_BookR and _SCE_BookR ( note where x is that is the root of your memory stick)
4)Now you have BookR installed. Once you have downloaded a ebook go to the _SCE_BookR folder and open it. In there there should be another folder called books. place all of your ebooks in there.

Viruses, adware, spam, spyware, …..oh the humanity! Every member of my friends and family has enough filth on their computers to put them on the FBI watch list. I actually have a family member (no names) who was so excited that she had won a free cruise according to a pop-up that they went on it.
Process Explorer

So where do you begin?? Well the first and best thing to discover is what excactly you are up against. Microsoft gives away a handy tool called process explorer, available here. With this tool you can check and see what processes (programs) are actually running. Now when you run this tool most of the stuff you will see will look like gobbledeegook, so thankfully you can right click on whichever one you want and do a little google search automatically on it. It will be surprising to see just how many things are going on while your computer is idle. This tool is useful for identifying active viruses running in the background and then stopping them from running.

Once your computer is no longer running the virus programs, you should run a virus scan.In my opinion the best place to get anitvirus is Antivir from the very generous folks at free-av.com. This software is, unlike a certain cruise, actually free. There is one pop-up every time it updates and that is it. Not too mention it works beautifully, and is as good as any pay one I have seen (Norton is the devil!). You can get it right here.

As well you should pick up lavasoft Ad-Aware from here. This gets rid of all the nasty spyware and other things that cause pop-ups, spam messages, and other nasty stuff.
Now I know you want to hop right into and scrub the hell out of your computer.But hold on, a lot of bugs are stubborn and don’t respond well to the process. Instead of running these cleaner programs in an infected environment, we are going to load them in a more clinical place. We’re going to the happy and magical land of “safe mode”! To do this, follow these steps:

Restart the computer

Once the computer turns on begin to repeatedly tap the F8 key

A blank screen will appear with a few options

Use the arrow keys to select safe mode

Your computer will start in Safe mode.

Now ironically safe mode takes a lot longer to start than normal. (I wonder if normal mode is unsafe?) . But once it does use process explorer to make sure that nothing evil is happening to your precious processor and then run a full virus scan with Antivir, and a full system scan with Ad-Aware. Then reboot again and go back to normal windows mode and away from your safe place.
Be sure to allow both lavasoft and antivir to connec to the internet to update regularly, and start doing a system scan right away. Now if even after scanning in safe mode you’re computers antivirus starts going off like the a slot machine on a payout, you may have a virus problem and need more help then it can offer. Send me an email and I will be sure to get right on advanced virus removal as a post for you.

Now that you have defeated the malware and viral filth, it is time to do something about how you found yourself in this compromising position. First let’s stop using bearshare or other file sharing software. If you absolutely must download music and pornography till your eyes and ears bleed, then for god’s sake use this program here. It does all the stuff that those other ones do, but is not evil and trying to make money.

Next, stop using Internet Explorer. Seriously, you heard me, stop using that garbage Microshaft program. I actually like Microsoft (well Bill Gates more specifically), but that explorer program is the epitome of everything wrong about that company. Get yourself Firefox 2.0. It will do almost everything you need (It has a spell checker built in, how cool is that?), and most viruses are written to attack Microshaft products. Firefox seems to get off pretty easy so far. Get it here.

And if you kind of know what you’re doing, or your internet company doesn’t hate its customers like mine, then try out Thunderbird by the same awesome guys as Firefox for the exact same reasons. It’s an email program with a junk mail filter that is magical. You heard me, I said magical!

Free Must Have Softwares....

These are the absolute best programs I know of and actually use as much as possible. All this software is free (let me know if one is not) and I encourage anyone to comment with any that they think should be added. I will add them to the master list and we will throw this on the right in perpetuity. If you think that I am on crack about some of these let me know that too. Together we can change the world!!

adobe’s acrobat reader - sadly, since pdf’s are the most unnecessarily overused format of all time (not saying they’re bad - just overused in some cases), this is a necessity. be careful though it will try and install adobe album or some other crap program so watch where you click. i hate it when companies do that. anyway adobe reader isn’t that great anyweay but it is much better with the next program that makes things much nicer…

ad-aware - you all should know this one, by now. it kills off spyware and other nasty little things that lurk on your machine.

antivir - The free antivirus, the professional version is well worth hunting down/buying. it does the job, but doesn’t have all the bloat and extra “goodies” that something like norton or mcafee does - the best av app i’ve used so far.

azareus - the bit torrent client. if you know what bittorrent is, then you should check this out. formerly shad0w’s experimental client, this is my preferred means of running/downloading with .torrents

bb4win - a version of the blackbox linux shell, made for windows. tired of the standard explorer.exe gobbling up all your resources or just running as slow as molasses in january? give this lil’ fella a try, then. it’s definitely a different shell/desktop experience, but it’s lightning fast, low on ram-usage and is highly customizable. i love it. plus it makes you look like a crazy geek to all your friends. not for the resistant to change!

burnatonce - a free burner? yep it exists! nero has gone south in my books, way to much of a hog of resources. seems like even on a super computer it takes like 15 minutes to get o the burn page. so this is a handy alternative. you burn by using the windows explorer method of copying files to the cd and pasting. also handles cd images. very lightweight and fast.

college alarm clock - turn your favorite mp3 into your alarm clock. perfect for bachelors with thier cpu attached to a massive stereo system. trust me this will wake you up! possible the only thing of value left on geocities!

crap cleaner - crap cleaner is great little app for scrubbing your OS of all those little things that seem to slow it down. not a bad little app.

ephod - i hate itunes, and for that reason i never bought an ipod, but if you did, this is a great alternative to manage your files. (warning!!- may not work on newer ipods cuz apple hates you having any control of that expensive little box you bought and own and should be able to do anything you want with!)

eraser - a handy little app for erasing those files that you don’t want anyone to know about. Eraser is a secure data removal tool for Windows. It completely removes sensitive data from your hard drive by overwriting it several times with carefully selected patterns.

filezilla - this is an excellent ftp client that is free, and works extremely well, resuming downloads and managing large ftp transactions.

firefox - an alternative to internet explorer (the best alternative, some might say…). this browser isn’t free, but it is blazingly fast, uses minimal resources, includes popup blocking, tabbed browsing, and is almost infinitely customizable in terms of menus, buttons, windows, etc.

gimp - once the adobe photoshop replacement for linux, it is now available on windows. not bad for those of us that want to save oh, about $1,000.00+ which is what photoshop cs2 retails for.

hijackthis- this program will nuke some of the more persistent spyware you have on your machine. basically it lists all changes to your browser since you installed it and gives you the option to delete them. great for killing stubborn toolbars and web search add-ons.

Infranview - A great little free imaging app. I highly recommend it.

kceasy- a filesharing app that knocks limewire, kazaa, edonkey, and ll the other ones out there off the map. why? because it does all those networks and is from sourceforge. that means it is ad and spyware free. great for sharing music with people. rememebr only use your powers for good and support the artist!

maxmem - the best little ram cleaner in the land, for use when something decides to eat up all your resources. helps speed up a bogged down computer too. very light weight.

mirc - simple to use, but still one of the best irc clients available for windows. if you don’t know irc is, then don’t worry about this one. but it used to be the way to download movies and anything else good.

media player classic - it’s the windows media player, v6.4, but heavily modified and able to play damn near any video format you throw at it, especially when used with…k-lite codec pack - here, you can find a very nice little codec pack - it has all the codecs i need and none of the extra crap that some of the enormous packs have. also, you can find “quicktime alternative” and “realplayer alternative” here, which will let you play .mov or .ra files with media player classic, instead of having to install the bloated quicktime or realplayer themselves.

NVU - Quite possibly the best (and free) website authoring program out there. I can’t imagine how I ever made web pages without this one.

openoffice- a great alternative to microsoft office, that allows you to save as microshaft docs, and open them. very handy app.

spybot - search & destroy - yet another spyware cleaner, in my opinion a bot out of date but some people still swear by it. it does seem to catch the things that ad-aware misses.

synergy - share your mouse and keyboard across multiple computers and monitors…kinda hard to explain, see for yourself here. they show it just after the intro and silly video at 3 minutes in.

thunderbird - the mozilla group certainly does make an excellent email client. completely free and open source, this easily beat outlook/outlook express as my preferred email client.

tightvnc - access your computer from another computer. also you can log into your ocmputer and control it from the internet with this cool app. I use it all the time. for advanced users, a how to will be on here soon.

tweakui - allows you to tweak the timing of events and numerous other settings in regards to your windows desktop. this is one program everyone should have.

vlc - vlc media player is one lightweight program with some heavyweight features. playing any file under the sun with the k-lite codec pack above this little app can also host and stream files from your computer to the net. what better way to browse your porn archives when your on the road?

winrar - able to open numerous archive formats (.zip, .ace, .tar), etc, but also it’s own .rar format, which can give much better compression rates than the better-known .zip format.

Well that should just about do it for now. Have fun with those. I think they are great myself. Rememebr to donate and contribute to the free software community if you can.

I hate it when I buy (download) a movie, a TV show, and it won't play in my Windows Media Player. I have to go Google for codec packs, and then I'm confused and don't know which codec pack to pick, the lite one, the big one, or the super one. Then I have to wait for it to download, and then install, and then restart my computer (I hate that).

Luckily I stumbled across an amazing media player, that plays almost any type of media file with no prior installation of codecs. Till now, I haven't thrown a movie or media file at it and it didn't play it. Magical huh?! It's called VLC Media player. I recommend you to download it and install it now. It will save you lots, and I mean lots of time messing around with all the codecs BS!

How to Record Online Radio Stations?

Record Songs from your Fav Radio Stations! EASY!

Let’s say you are bored of your music collection and want to experiment new genres or just want to find more songs that fit in your desired genre. In such case I resort to online radio stations and there are tons of them. So let’s assume you find a radio station you like and you just let the music jam in the background while you are working. Unexpectedly and out of nowhere you hear this song that you never heard before and you really like it, but shoot the song just finished and you didn’t even get the name of the song down. You just wish the radio would play that song again but you keep listening for days and still nothing!

So to avoid such disappointment and after googling the dilemma, I found an amazing free add-on to Winamp that enables you to record online streams. Not only that but it automatically tags each track and puts it in a folder on your desktop. Is it legal? RIAA might think not, but for ages people have been recording their favourite radio stations, so I say let it be.

Bla Bla Bla.. so how does this whole thing work?

First you need to download Winamp. If you don’t already have it (download here). After downloading and installing Winamp, download a program called Streamripper (download). Install Streamripper and restart Winamp. After you restart Winamp you'll find a similar icon to the one in the photo below:

That window below is Streamripper. Now all you need to do is find a radio station. I prefer Di.FM [click here]. DI.FM offers all the music genres I can think of. From Jazz, Reggae, Electronic, Ambient, Guitar, Hip Hop, to Classical Beethoven music and Classic Rap and lots of others. So check out their website and make your selection. It offers streams for Windows Media Player, Winamp, and AAC. For this tutorial and to be able to record the station, click on the Winamp stream (offered at 96k). After you make your choice, play the stream and click on start in Streamripper to start recording the station:

As each song is recorded it will be placed on your desktop in a folder, each track will be tagged with the appropriate song title and artist:

Increase Torrenting and web surfing speed

When I first got my DSL connection way back, even at the speed of 1Mb, I continuously experienced slow browsing. My browser always seemed sluggish and the pages took ages to render. That is because simultaneously while browsing, I always had my bittorrent client downloading several torrents at full speed.

What I wanted to be able to do is to download a torrent and at the same time browse the web at the speed as if I am not downloading anything? Could I? After searching for quiet sometime, I found an amazing software "Cfos Speed".

What this program does, is it manages to prioritize your applications in regarding to their usage to your internet connection (traffic shaping).
